For a change, I present to you a few recipes that are not desserts!
On the menu:
Beef Pinwheels and Green Beans Supreme.

Pinwheels
A bit of honesty here, my hands don't touch raw beef and i don't eat ketchup so I had to do a few substitutions. By doing so, I completely changed the way this recipe was meant to taste, I'm sure. I used ground turkey and a package of taco mix instead. Hey! It worked, don't laugh!***********************************************

I didn't realize that this recipe had a photo until after I had made it. Now looking at the magazine image, there is nooo way anything in that photo came from a can...No way. And those onions on top? (I'm guessing that is what they are) look more like french fried onions, not those limp little things in the soup mix.

I have to give it to the cooks of yesteryear. These recipes took much longer that I was expecting and wanting to be in the kitchen. Making and rolling out biscuit dough has now made it to the top of my list of ways to torture myself.
Both recipes did okay on the flavor scale but nothing I would ever make again...And damn those green bean bastards for not fessing up....canned? My ass!

My mom makes these pinwheels for breakfast but she uses canned crescent roll dough and sausage and makes them with scrambled eggs. Yum.

ReplyDeleteI ditto the raw meat feelngs, so remember they have Morningstar Vegetarian ground beef. It is quite tasty when spiffed up with spices!

ReplyDeleteThose look interesting. I love rolling out dough. I would definitely substitute fresh or frozen beans and fresh mushrooms for the casserole, but that looks pretty tasty. I've made appetizers with rolled up tortillas stuffed with things--those are fun. Those things don't save though--they get soggy quickly. ReplyDeleteMy mom used to make beef pinwheels when we were growing up. They were a little different - more like shredded beef, and I don't remember pepper or pimentos, and she topped them with gravy. My brother and I used to call them dog biscuits. hahah Nice kids! Although, we did like them. They were a lot better then the *bean pie* she used to make.
ReplyDeleteOoh I have that snowflake pyrex casserole dish. It's lovely to see it in action. 1958! I have old cookbooks I love to look at but have yet to make anything from them. Kudos to you, going where no woman has dared to tread in decades. Though I have made Mock Apple Pie. You'd prob like the American Century Cookbook by Jean Anderson. I don't own it yet... but check it out from the library at least once a year and dig reading it. I think it inspired my to make the pie. It did cross my mind that composed salads would probably make a comeback now that spinach greens have cast a pall over fresh leafs. Good thing I've got my jello cookbook.
