it has been some time since i have come across any interesting vintage finds until this past weekend. i happened across a yard sale that was nothing but vintage stuff. only the folks who were doing this yard sale knew this and were asking astronomical prices on most everything but....this really tall glass (nearly 8 inches), $1 and this set of melamine bowls, $10. the dinosaur is merely to help illustrate the TALLness of the glass, it didn't come with it.
i like the teeny feet! they remind me of little witches cauldrons.
the larger bowl has a rubber plug, i guess so it can be filled with warm water? thus the flaming "therm-o-bowl" mark?
if anyone has any info on these items i would enjoy hearing it! the guy at the sale thought the glass was actually a cocktail shaker but he didn't have a lid.
AAH!!! i'm super jealous of your thermo-bowls, i only have the large green one (with the rubber stopper), i had no idea they came in smaller bowls as well. the little feet are freaking adorable, right? as far as having any info on them, the only thing that i can fathom is maybe you can fill up the bottom of the bowl with water, freeze it and use it to chill fruit on at a barbecue (using the smaller dishes to serve in)? who the hell knows... that was a crazy longshot, huh?
ReplyDeleteI have the large green bowl (minus the plug) and four small green bowls. They belonged to my grandmother who died 17 years ago at the age of 90. She used them for salad.
ReplyDeleteI had a bowl with a similar plug thingy and a suction cup on the bottom when I was but a wee thing. It was to be filled with warm water to keep the food warm since baby feeding can take a while. Clearly these aren't for babies, but it does look like the same premise...
ReplyDeleteThose bowls are awesome!!! Love the colors.
ReplyDeleteThe bowls are fabulous! I have never seen anything like them!
ReplyDeleteOf course i have some bowls like this but i dont know anything about them, I must look it up now!!!
ReplyDeleteThey seem a little oriental?....Not sure... but the thermo-bowl would be a greeat substitute for their on-hand cooking equiptment?...They usually do "Pot Luck" which is everyone bring one dish each then share...
ReplyDeleteThis seems very appropriate for this situation, helping keep the food warm and helping with the illusion that it has just been cooked...
Hope this was helpful?...

bestill my melamine beating heart. nice. the bowls can be used either way as I understand it (for chilling or keeping warm). oh, the envy - may the plastic gods smile upon you for many purchases to come.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the Therm-O-Bowls. I have a set that I got from my Grandmother. (I remember eating Bugles and Mr. Salty Pretzels in front of the TV, watching The Brady Bunch and Love American Style.
ReplyDeleteIf you're looking to search for them on Ebay, they're made by Reinecke. They are insulated. The small bowls basically have air inside which keeps hot hot and cold cold (we use 'em for ice cream sometimes).
Don't put 'em in the dishwasher or submerge them. If the seal isn't tight you'll get water inside and never get it out. (I know because we ruined one that way.)
