Houseware Department: Towels

Love the style of these towels.  In my kitchen I use some that are similar.  I got them cheap from Dollar Tree so they certainly aren't Cannon brand.

This post is part of a long series I am doing that showcases ads and products from old pharmacies and 5 and Dime stores.  All of the ads are scans from the publication Chain Store Age September 1955.  The products photographed are from my personal collection.  I am running this series on auto-post so I can work on some projects around my real house.  I will return at the end of this series (April or May) back to "normal".

Houseware Department: Rubbermaid

Rubbermaid still going strong today.  I like the display in this ad.   It's a bit cluttered but it appears the dust pan has a graphic with legs and feet?

Back in 2005 Rubbermaid came out with a "retro" line that I posted about here:
Rubbermaid Retro.  Still to this day I am apparently the only person, (not even Rubbermaid!) to post anything about it.

I still have all of these pieces but use them for cute storage mostly.  Yes, I use the trash bin to store stuff in, nothing exciting though, just candy molds and cupcake toppers.

More recently, I used the laundry basket for the Apron Strings exhibit at the opening reception as a photo booth prop last year:

Houseware Department: Bakelite Film

Now let's peruse the bins in the Houseware Department!

The best part of this ad is this little lady!

Notions Department: Curvet Apron hoop

I have a vintage promotional card for Curvet apron hoops:

I used it in the "Sewing Day" display case for the Apron Strings exhibit last year:

Notions Department: Sewing patterns

Since we are in the 'Notions Department" I thought I would share a few vintage patterns from my collection.

I have a crap ton of old patterns.  Most of them I buy for the cover art.

I also buy some for particular features I like.
I love those big angled pockets with a flap!

I like the scrunchy midsection on this one.

Love the sheer open skirt apron deal.

This one is my favorite!  It is a really old pattern, one of those with no markings or print on the pieces.  Once I can figure out how to size it a bit larger I want to make this outfit (sans the midriff).  maybe I could add one of those scrunchy midsection deals from that Butterick pattern!

Those mindless clip art ladies sure love buttons!

This ad is so cute!

Notions Department: Trims

Trims, Trims, Trims!

I pick up vintage packs of trim at thrift stores anytime I can find them.

The labels are an added bonus.  Too cute!

I also like the ads on the labels.

Send 3 labels and 10 cents!
I heard a few years ago there was still a company that would send trim scraps to children to use for cheap.  I haven't looked at any new labels lately to confirm this.

This is the coolest!  Patterns and ideas for embellishing with trims on the inside of old Wright's labels.  I would like to make that Top-ette!

Notions Department: Replace Worn Cuffs

I have never had to replace any worn cuffs in my life.  Maybe it's because I don't live in the cold winter northern area where cuffs are worn down to the frostbitten skin due to massive snow shoveling and putting snow tires on vehicles.  It's more likely because I even own anything with cuffs.

I do have a pair of Smith's knitted replacement cuffs in my vintage notions collection, if I ever find myself in need them:

Notions Department

Our first stop is the Notions Department.
I have been collecting vintage notion items for quite some time.  Here are some that I don't have a corresponding ad from the Chain Store Age 1955 magazine.

Needle Kits.
I LOVE that kitten one.

DIY belt and buckle kit.
I like the packaging design with the mirrored ladies checking out each other's fantastic hair matching belts .

Bra-bak Repair kit.
You need this after the asshole boys in math class snap your bra too many times.

or you can use Renu-Bak to refresh your brassiere!

Bondex Iron On fabric repair material.
Bondex kid is too cute!  But he seems to be a bit accident prone.

Sew On replacement pockets.
Replacement pockets man is cute too!  He must put a hurting on his pockets to be in need of them being triple thread reinforced and rounded corners for added strength.

This is a little advertising plastic thimble I found at a thrift store.  The only thimble I own and use.

One of my favorite vintage notions in my collection!
Knee and ass patches!  These two hang out with the Bondex kid and the Patchies pack, rough housing in the far corner on the playground during recess.
