Lime Ribbon Delight

For our St. Paddy's Day dessert I decided to try out this vintage 1971 Betty Crocker recipe called Lime Ribbon Delight!

The original recipe calls for little white clay pipes as the extra pizzazz but I happen to be fresh out.  So I just printed some images of vintage St. Paddy's Day die-cuts featuring a white pipe, laminated them with clear packing tape and done!

A wee bit o' decor.

I'll have to do an update on how the cake tasted but I feel lucky that it will be quite good!
Update:  The cake was very good!  I could see it being done with different flavors of jello such as strawberry and pineapple.  the interior of mine did have that nice "ribbon" of green but I didn't get a photo.

St. Patty's Day Dinner

For our St. Patty's day dinner I made us this "Irish Corn" inspired by a vintage recipe from Bird's Eye Corn.  To make it more healthy I omitted the flour, butter, and cream and instead used fat free greek yogurt and a bunch of spices (chef's choice!).

For the official recipe see below:

1 box Bird’s Eye Golden Sweet Corn, partially thawed
3 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon chopped onion
2 teaspoons flour
2/3 cup light cream or rich milk
1 tablespoon chopped pimento
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
1/4 teaspoon salt
Dash of pepper

Place the Bird’s Eye Corn in saucepan (note how perfect each tender kernel is); add butter and onion. Cover and heat until corn is completely thawed. Remove cover and saute about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle flour over corn and blend quickly. Add cream or milk gradually, stirring constantly. Continue cooking over low heat until sauce is thickened-about 5 minutes. Add pimento, parsley, and seasonings. Makes 3 or 4 servings.

For the main course I baked a quiche (recipe here) and bedazzled the top with some bell pepper shamrocks.

And then not pictured but I also made some oven baked potato chucks as the other side.
I thought the meal turned out okay but the rest of the fam just wasn't into it.

Erin Go Oh Yeah!

What better way to celebrate St. Patty's Day than with some fine green Irish brew!?
Kool-Aid that is!

Add in some sugar cookie shamrocks and you're all set for shennigans!

Here is the sugar cookie recipe I always use.

The cookie cutter I used was a vintage Tupperware clover I picked up who knows where.

You may have taken the time to notice and even read the little note that was left for the harried housewife in the vintage ad.  If not I'll summarize: "Snotty Aunt Kate called and last minute invited 7 moochers (aka The Duffy's) to the party and she demands you make them more Kool-Aid."  Well, that's at least how I read it.

To that I have this come back for Aunt Kate and the Duffy's:

A classic from the fine snarky folks of mikwright!

I want the gold! Give me the gold!

 🍀 🍀 🍀 🍀 🍀 🍀 🍀 🍀 🍀 🍀 🍀

It's weird how some things become family traditions around our house.  And this is one of them.  Every year we all gather 'round to watch the Mobile Leprechaun news segment from 2006.  So many good lines to chant and we fold over with laughter every single time we watch!

We live about a hour from Mobile so it's kinda fun thinking it's "local".

We could see him and get to say "YEaH!"
We could met the Leprechaun hunter with his thousand year old plastic calling flute!
We could get the gold!  We want the gold!
Or we could catch a crackhead that got a hold of some bad stuff!

Back in 2019 we did catch a glimpse of him in our own yard, up in a tree!

Unfortunately we happened to shine a light on him and he disappeared...but we got a neat crack pipe out of the deal!

Clover O' Shamrock

Another bit o' nostalgia again today.  This is a clover man PB made in kindergarten.
Have I told you all that he's a senior in high school now?

Leprechaun Trap

Back in 2010 PB and I made a Leprechaun trap together but it never made it to here...not much did.

But here it is now, with a heaping dose of nostalgia.

Here is sweet PB 6 years old showing how the trap works.  He is wearing one of my favorite outfits of his at the time (I still have the shirt!).

Here is a close up of the trap hole, covered by leaves.
He and I came up with making this last minute and had such a fun time scouting for materials around the yard to use.
The next morning he actually trapped a leprechaun!  It was a vintage elf wearing all green, kinda like a knee hugger.  It was the "Elf on the Shelf"  idea that the leprechaun was "Toy Story" frozen when it gets caught...just something I came up with.  PB still has his leprechaun on a shelf in his room.  I should have had the insight to have this little guy come to life every year and cause mischief on St. Patty's eve....

Irish Potato Candy

These mini potato candies actually contain no potatoes.  I found the recipe out in internetland and I believe them to be a modern confectionary.

1/4 cup butter soft
4 oz cream cheese
1 tsp coconut extract
4 cups powder sugar
2 1/2 cups shredded coconut
Powder cinnamon

Beat butter, cream cheese, and extract together till smooth.  Slowly add powdered sugar while mixing in-between.  Add coconut and blend.  Roll into mini potato shaped balls.  Roll in powdered cinnamon.  Chill and serve.

I found it helpful to chill the mixture after all the mixing and before rolling into balls.
These things are sickly sweet and I couldn't handle eating more than 3 at a time.
For some added fun you could put candy eyes on them turning them into wee Mr. Potato Heads!

Frito Kid St. Patrick's Party

Here is March's Frito Kid party theme....St. Patrick's Party.

Here is the spread:

I made little green pita bread rounds and tinted the chicken salad green, then topped it with a frito chip garnish.

Lemonade "frosted" with lime sherbet.  I used a melon baller to make mini sherbet scoops.  I am not sure if that is "frosted".

And of course mini pots of gold!  Fritos chips of gold!

Plan a Party St. Patty Plates

I picked up these vintage Hallmark party paper plates at an estate sale last summer.

It was the first sale (of only 3) I have attended since the pandemic started.  It was being run by friends and I knew they weren't putting up with any malarkey when it came to mask enforcement so I felt fairly safe.

I certainly have no plans to ruin these plates with servings of cabbage and corned beef.  I was thinking they could be quick wall decor if I can bring myself to take them out of the wrapper.

Festive Killarney Cake

Happy St. Paddy's Day (belated)!
My in-touch with calendars and dates has been a bit off lately and I honestly thought today was Pinch Me day.  Yesterday I pulled out my few bits of decor along with some other random stuff that I thought could work.  I had it all neatly stacked ready to go, then as Mr. Husband and I were winding down for the evening I happened to glance at the date and realized St. Patrick's Day had just passed us by!  I typically don't decorate or acknowledge the day too much but I wanted to do a little something since I have come across a few vintage pieces over the past couple of years.  Also injecting a bit of fun into life right now, given the current state of things, would be welcomed.
For our dessert tonight I made "Festive Killarney Cake"  brought to us by Aunt Jenny and Spry shortening.

Good Housekeeping Magazine March 1950

I only used Aunt Jenny's ad as a serving suggestion.  The cake is a prefab lemon mix and the icing is prefab tub.  The shamrocks on her cake are made from green gumdrops, which I didn't have on hand.  I did have a few patches of shamrocks growing in some of my potted plants though.  I think it turned out quite cute!

A wee bit O' decor!
Most St. Paddy days we are out of town because it usually falls during Spring Break.  Also doing an all encompassing decorating scheme for a single day is a bit much.  Over the past few years I have found a small bit of vintage St. Paddy day bits so I figured since we are all home bound right now I'd do it up.
Above is a wee gnome leprechaun I bought on ebay a few months back and the "A wish for St. Patrick's Day" cards I picked up at an estate sale.  I found the adorable fabric at Joann.  The mini cauldrons are from dollar tree and the gold and green beads are free from the Mardi Gras parade!

I got 6 of these large sized die cuts all at the same time from an estate sale several years ago.  I left up the regular decor and just piled all the green in front!

The table centerpiece is a Halloween cauldron, Mardi Gras beads, and a fuzzy green wreath from a thrift store along with precious little leprechaun guarding his gold.

I am afraid I am becoming that lady.  You know, that old lady that decorates for every single random and major holiday.  I guess it was bound to happen.  I already celebrate stuff like Sea Monkey Day so it's just the natural progression toward full fledged Grandma Holiday Decorating Extravaganzas.
I'll see you all at Easter!  I know...it's that bad.
