$4,000 Half-Time Spoon Rolls

These rolls come from the 1950 second annual Pillsbury Bake-Off, taking home the $4,000 prize.
Mine don't quite look as light as the original and probably taste a bit off since my yeast happened to expire back in 2020.  I "inherited" a cache of yeast after my mom passed away.  She was one of the many that jumped on the sourdough bandwagon during quarantine and she bought up a shit ton of the stuff.  I don't really do any yeast baking since it's such a waste of time and energy for all the prep nonsense that goes into it but since all the packets were "bestowed" upon me I finally got around to trying some of it.
The rolls turned out pretty good even though they were a bit dense, more of a yeast biscuit.
 I need to figure out something else I can use up the rest of this yeast stuff on since it's rising capabilities are quite past their life expectancy.  Yes, I know I can use it as garbage but that seems wasteful.  If anybody has ideas for extremely expired yeast, let me know.  I'm kinda thinking pizza crust, but non- food options would be interesting too.  Maybe it could be some kind of bug/critter repellant that has yet to be discovered.

Butter-Biscuit Turkey Twist

The last recipe I have to present to you on using up those turkey leftovers is "Butter-Biscuit Turkey Twist".  Seen below, front and center.

{image source Household Magazine October 1957}

This dish is an elaborate way to fancy up those leftovers.  Mine turned out a bit lumpy and dry but it's nothing that gravy can't help.  It's just a rolled up turkey biscuit and gravy therefore tasty.

(Another dish that I have made, seen in the top left corner within the 1957 image is Chip n' Chicken Bake if you are curious about that one)

Turketti

Our next recipe for using up those turkey leftovers is "Susan Makes Turketti".

(Good Housekeeping December 1951}

I don't know who this Susan is but she was damn proud of every step she did.  Susan did this, Susan did that, Susan cooks, Susan sprinkles...

Anywho.... It's just Turkey spaghetti.  Get over yourself Susan.

Holiday Club Sandwich

I have several vintage recipe suggestions to share with you for those impending turkey leftovers over the next few posts!
The first recipe is for a Holiday Club Sandwich, with the bonus of a full menu suggestion!

{Good Housekeeping December 1951}

It comes to us from the fine folks of Du Pont chemicals.
Make sure your bread is loaded up with Myoban...to retard spoilage...it's added value at no extra cost!
Sounds safe to me!

Obviously this is a tasty sandwich because deviled ham is involved!  I used french fried onions in place of the thinly sliced onions as this makes more sense to use up from Thanksgiving leftovers.

And just a side note, if your bread isn't baked with added Mycoban you can still get it!  It's now an Antifungal topical cream for athletes foot and ringworm!  Just use it as a spread*!

(*Consult your physician on all condiments!  Don't use any ointments and salves as dipping sauces unless medically directed to do so!)

The Dining Room:
I am working on having a food/baking theme in the dining room but it's not all together just yet for this season but here is what I have done:

Table centerpiece:

On the side board I decided to put up the TV Dinner themed decor again:

I'm thinking about making some more canned items with vintage printed labels, maybe some fake food like a pumpkin pie.  Lots of fun possibilities to try for the future!

New Fall Wreath and Front Door Decor 2023

I put together a new wreath for my front door this Fall season.  My old Thanksgiving wreath while adorable I felt it was too small for my door.

For this wreath I used burlap white polka dot ribbon and orange gingham ribbon from 1.25 Tree, some vintage orange rick rack and blanket binding from my stash,  and a couple of cute images I found out in internetland.  I backed the images with cardstock and covered them in mod podge for a bit of weather protection.  The base wreath is one I got on clearance from Michaels.  It was originally a natural color but I dyed it black with watered down acrylic paint and then a final coating of flat black spray paint.

Here's my front stoop decorated for Fall.  Last year I thought I had over did it so I pared it back this year, which it's now a bit too bare/boring for me.

I did still find a spot for my old wreath.

I also left all the year round spider decor out.

 And as you see with the pumpkins I was able to easily remove the painted features from my Halloween JOLs.

Fakey Turkey Legs

If you've ever wanted to have turkey for dinner and dessert on Thanksgiving here you go!
Fakey Turkey Legs are made from a pear, covered in a 'wrapple' caramel sheet, a pretzel rod for the bone, and a bit of white fondant for the end.

🍂New Fall Stuff 2023: Vintage Early American Barkcloth Curtains🍂

I'm throwing this in as a late entry for the new stuffs of the year.  We found a stash of 8 panels of vintage Early American style barkcloth curtains at a thrift for 12 bucks!  Each panel is not long enough for my windows but if I sew them bottom to top then it will make 4 panels that will work.  I was hoping to get this project done for this year but it's going to take a bit to hand wash all the panels and for them to air dry and then to figure out the sewing.  All the panels are pinch pleats sooo that's going to be a dilemma to work out.  It's something I definitely want to do for next year's Fall decor.

Pumpkin Scarecrow Dumplings Craft

 I picked up a bag of mini real pumpkins on clearance from Target and turned them into a cute scarecrow duo!  I made all their bits from scrap stuff I had on hand: jute twine, burlap, brown gingham contact paper, "straw" is from a 1.25 Tree hula skirt, and twisted paper ribbon (same stuff I used to make Turkey Darling a few years back).

🍂New Fall Stuff 2023: Souvenir Set 🍂

A friend of mine has been reducing her cuteness hoard and passing the adorableness on to me!  Last year she did a vintage sale where I was able to score this wonderful ceramic vintage souvenir salt, pepper and tooth pick holder set!

🍂New Fall Stuff 2023: Ceramic Smoke Signals 🍂

A friend of mine has been working on reducing her massive collection of cuteness and yay for me!  Last year I bought this adorable ceramic teepee ash "tray" from her featuring the added fun that the smoke escapes through the top looking like smoke signals!  Since I don't smoke I bet if I'm nimble enough I could maybe get an incense cone up in there!

🍂 New Fall Stuff 2023: Melamine Fall Tray🍂

 I found this vintage large melamine TV tray (sans stand) at a thrift for 4 bucks last season.
It's my dream home and dream setting!

🍂 New Fall Stuff 2023: Dime Store Chic Trio of Owls🍂

Kicking off this season's series of Autumn posts is this adorable assemblage piece I bought from Dime Store Chic last year on a clearance sale she was running.  It's a vintage ceramic planter with a trio of owls on a log with added bits of newer things such as leaves, berries, nuts, pumpkins, and turkeys.  It's absolutely Fall perfection!   She makes all sorts of cute pieces for all the holidays along with selling some random bits of vintage ephemera, and she has such great prices!  Just absolute fun and whimsy that I can only aspire to have!
