Silver Springs

Our primary attraction when we went to Ocala, Fl was to visit historic Silver Springs!
I had visited in 2003, but Mr. Husband and PB had not yet been.

Here's a nugget o history:
Silver Springs began grabbing tourist's attention during the late 1800s with captains taking their sight seers down the crystal clear waters by steam boat.  It wasn't much later that the infamous idea of glass bottom boats was invented, which Silver Springs is so well known for.  During the 1920-30s, with automobile travel becoming more popular, the attraction known as Silver Springs was born.  It's biggest hey day was, of course, during the 1950-60s.  During this time the springs were used to film many movies and TV shows.  The most important, obviously being Universal Films Creature From the Black Lagoon.  The park has played host to a variety of additional attractions as well.  Ross Allen, a well known nature conversationalist and reptile handler had his base at Silver Springs from 1930-1970s.  Tommy Bartlett's Deer Ranch (1952-1975) featured over 200 tame deer which roamed free for guests to feed and pet.  Over the next few decades more attractions came and went, most including animal shows and exhibits.  The 1970s started seeing a decline in attendance, also known as Disney World.  In 1993 the state of Florida bought the park but continued to lease it out to various companies.  With numbers drastically declining throughout the last part of the 20th century and beginning of the new millennia, the state took over Silver Springs in 2012 and it became an official state park.  The glass bottom boats are still offered but that is about it other than the breath taking scenery of nature.  There are trails and a few museum exhibits showing the history of the park...and a small, extremely limited cafe (ice cream and pepsi....so ice cream and sewer water).

The beauty and history of the park makes Silver Springs a classic Florida attraction not to be missed.  It's a must-do if you are into old roadside attractions.

Our boat captain told us he has been operating a glass bottom boat for over 40 years.  And you could tell by his monotone speech pattern.  It was one of our favorite memories from the visit, the way he  spoke his spiel with a hum drum heavy southern accent.
"Tha.... waduh.... stays at a constant 74.... dugrees."

This is seeing through the glass bottom of the boat:

Even with there not being all the additional attractions (no alligator wrestling any more!) of earlier years, we still enjoyed the park immensely.  The museum areas were full of awesome vintage souvenirs and sweet lover air conditioning.

I loved this vintage paper boat souvenir showing that at one time you could hang your arm out the window and feed the fish slices of bread.  Those are both a big no-no now.  In modern times, the captain of the boat does sneak the fish some approved tidbits for the up close viewing pleasure of the passengers.

Many displays of postcards and brochures...

This was an amazing surprise:

These are two huge dioramas that used to travel around the country to promote tourism for the park during the mid 20th century.  They highlighted special features in miniature with lights and moving parts, such as the boats gliding through the springs.

The second display:

I thought these were marvelous.  An employee at the park said they are wanting to get them in working condition again.

When we visited the park it was early August and was horrifically hot.  Therefore we didn't do much of the trails.

But we did come across a mini baby creature still living among the swampy region!

Ocala Drive-In

During out trip to Ocala, Fl several years back, we stopped by the Ocala Drive-In Theatre.
Their movie selection for that day was something crappy like, Ice Age, so we didn't choose to "Drive-In".  We did check out the arcade (aka Fun Center) and had a load of fun there.  The interior was all dark with black lights and they had a bunch of retro/vintage video games.  Mr. Husband and PB really loved it.  It was the first time PB got to play games old style, standing up at a console and Mr. Husband was reliving his teen years.  The folks running the place were super sweet to us wide eyed tourists, and allowed us to go check out the Drive-In section even though we weren't going to stay for a movie.

Here is the front of the building, but the back of the screen.

Here is the parking and viewing area.

It's been awhile since I have been to a Drive-In Theatre. The last time was in 2007.
 I would love to see them make a come back.

Tas-T-O's Donuts

We ate at several local restaurants while in Ocala, Fl on vacation back in 2016.  However, while the food was good, the vintage buildings they were housed in had been badly 1985ifed so I didn't waste my time on photos.  We did happen to find a great donut shop while there called Tas-T-O's!

It's got all of the stuff we love.  Locally owned, been in business for decades, old original building, and a unique sign.  At this point the donuts can be stale rings of blah because it's gotten so many other things right, I would only taste them as yummy.
The extra interesting thing about Tas-T-O's is the way you order.  You don't come inside.  You stand at the window and point to what you want and pay at a window.
They had a great selection along with some specialty 'gourmet' donuts such as maple icing and bacon.
They also have this fun confectionery...

Donut holes on a stick!  Anything edible is always more fun on a stick!
Putting my approving aesthetic bias aside, the donuts were really good!
If I lived in Ocala, Tas-T-O's would be my go to for all my donut needs, which there are many...so, so many!

Silver Princess Motel

{vintage postcard}

The motel we choose to stay at for our Ocala, Florida vacation was The Silver Princess Motel!
I'm not sure how old it is, but I would guess it to be built in the 1950s.

This place was perfect.  It was loaded with vintage charm, clean, safe, and while on a main highway, it was located on the less traveled end.

{vintage postcard}

See the neon "Entrance" arrow sign on the left in the vintage postcard?

It's still there...and it works!

I loved the color combo of the exterior and real flowers in the built-in container gardens.  I see these usually become "ashtrays" at other vintage motels.

I took this picture to show the terrazzo on the front step.  The sleeping quarters were carpeted and rather bland when we stayed here, but I bet the room has this gorgeous flooring underneath.  I guess that would be my only complaint is that the bedroom looked like a plain typical motel styled room.  However I doubt there is a vintage motel out there that still has all of it's original room furniture, in decent condition...well, none other than Wigwam Village!

The bathroom was still vintage awesome though!  I loved the bathtub faucet knobs.

The grounds of the motel are so well maintained along with staying true to their vintage styling.

I love these metal patio umbrellas!  Most likely original, as seen below!

{vintage postcard}

In my below photo the pool area is to the right.

Compared to the vintage postcards, it is now enclosed and the slide is also gone.

Golly gee!  A wee wee fountain!

I thought this was super cool.  This area used to be for shuffle board!  Wish it still was.

The neon at night.

I came across this vintage photo of a family that stayed at the Silver Princess motel in the 1960s.
I wish I had seen it before our stay because I would have loved to stage PB and Mr. Husband in the same pose as the dad and son...maybe even dressed them similar, tube socks and all!

We stayed here for four days and absolutely loved it.
This trip even felt like a true vintage vacation.  We went vintage sight seeing during the day, ate at old restaurants, and then came back to the motel to chill in the pool.
Mr. Husband and I both have ranked this as one of our all time favorite vacations.
In the upcoming posts I'll be sharing the places and sights we experienced while in Ocala, Florida!

Ocala Motels

The first thing to consider when going on vacation other than where to go, is where to stay.
I wanted to stay in a vintage motel and Ocala is full of them!  Some not in the best locations, so as I was researching the one to pick I would do a google streetview 360 and make sure I didn't see any blurred out prostitutes hanging around, or that the sign said things like "monthly rates, meth allowed as payment".

Even if we didn't stay in a particular motel, we did do drive-bys while in town to get photos of the awesome signage and mid century architecture.

Here are the places we didn't stay:

🌞 🌞 🌞
  Holiday Motel

{vintage postcard}
As it was in the 1960s.

As it is today.

Holiday motel has the remnants of a great old sign that has unfortunately been reworked with modern bits.  This motel was a little shady looking and right on a busy highway.

This sign is fantastic and I wanted to stay here just for it but no, no boo boo.  It had people sitting around the front of each unit with 'nothing to do' if you know what I mean.

{modern times}

I thought the property for this motel was beautiful.  Look at that oak tree!  We didn't stay here because we had read a few reviews that made the place sound like it may have at one time been a brothel.

🌞 🌞 🌞
The Alamo Motel

{vintage postcard}
"You Will Remember The Alamo"

Yes, you will remember The Alamo...but only in nightmares.  I am actually not sure if this place was even open but it was not somewhere we would have stayed.  The pool had been filled in and is now a rectangle of grass.  It would have made a fun picture to put an inflatable pool toy down and pretend to be in a pool though.

🌞 🌞 🌞
Silver Springs Motel
{circa 2016}

The Silver Springs motel is located not too far from the Silver Springs State Park.

{circa 2016}

{me circa 2003, check how much the palm has grown)

I stayed here before and the place wasn't too bad then.  It had some neat features and fixtures.

{circa 2016}

Lovely plants and architecture.

Back in 2003, in the same spot as above.

I didn't get a good vibe off of it when we went by in 2016 to take the current photos.

 ðŸŒž 🌞 🌞
The Dixie Motel

Yikes.  Don't even think about staying here.  Neat motel details on the window though.

🌞 🌞 🌞
The Palms Motel

The motel was nothing to look at...I mean really.  I don't know where the motel to this sign was.  It was just a neat sign on the highway.

🌞 🌞 🌞
Sun-Days Motel

 This guy is a cutie.  But not the motel.

🌞 🌞 🌞
Sun Plaza Motel

{circa 2003}
On the trip I took back in 2003 I wasn't aware of this motel until after dropping money down at the Silver Springs Motel and then seeing this place on the way into the Silver Springs Park.  It was clean, vintage, and so freaking adorable.  The sign alone was worth staying there!  I pledged to myself if I ever made it back to Silver Springs I would be staying at The Sun Plaza Motel.

{circa 2016}
In 2016, when I checked into staying here I discovered that they had removed the cute sun man from the sign.  Idiots.  Then I saw they hoity toity-ed up the place removing a lot of the vintage charm along with charging a crap ton to stay there.
I am sure it is a nice place to stay; safe, convenient, and no bedbugs.
But while we were looking for those kind of features in the motel we would choose to stay at, above all it had to have vintage charm.

Next up is where we stayed!

A Virtual Florida Vacation!

Just so you know, that post card is a liar.  COOL in Summer?!?  Sure, if you are vacationing from Hell, it may seem "cooler" to you.  The summers around here average in the upper 90s with the humidity being like drowning in a sauna.  Sweltering in Summer, that's what the card should say.

But the great thing about Florida is there are a ton of neat old vacation/ roadside stuff still around.  We collect vintage Florida souvenirs and love to research and discover old stuff in our state that is new to us.  We have numerous Florida spots we still want to visit.

A few years ago (2016) we went to Ocala and Silver Springs for several days. Also within this time frame we went to Orlando.  I didn't post about it because we had planned on going to Weeki Wachee within the year and I had the idea of doing a series of posts highlighting all spots.  We have had to cancel that Weeki Wachee trip 4 times over the past 4 years.  Either it was a hurricane or the park was reaching max capacity before the gate even opened or PB couldn't miss school to go during their down season.  But since at this time it looks like taking a real vacation is not in the near future for us or the rest of the country, I thought I would post a virtual two week vacation for folks to enjoy!

So slather on some tanning lotion, blow up a beach ball, and get some sand in your ass....You're going to Florida!
