I can't think of what these are officially called. They are for marking hamburgers/steaks on the grill for what preferences one may have: Rare, medium rare, medium, and well done.
That sounds like too much work to me. I say you get what you get or have a bowl of salad.
I bought these cuties as kitchen decor, not to nasty them up with raw meat anyway.
These picks were a very early ebay purchase I made probably in 2001...yikes. I have had them for 20 years?! I still love them!
